Thanks to Valve, Dota 2 players that take their rank seriously have a chance to stop seeing blue. The rank disparity seems to go both ways: high-skill players smurf in lower matches for entertainment or education, and low-skill players buy higher-level accounts. Even players using smurfs in lower accounts can feel accomplished if their higher-level team carries them to victory. Already, though, criticism has arisen about the obstacles that the system creates for aspiring professional players. Dota 2 players are hoping for the same results. Some are concerned that the phone system isolates players in much poorer regions. Since the Dota 2 authentication system only requires a basic telephone, most players will likely avoid this issue.

This ostensibly makes it difficult for skilled players to “climb” up the matchmaking ranking and out of Elo hell , due to the difficulty of consistently winning games under these conditions. Its existence in various games has been debated, and some game developers have called it an illusion caused by cognitive bias. The term was coined based on the Elo rating system designed by Arpad Elo , which was initially used for chess games but began to be used in video games as well. Elo rankings have also been “abused” by players who create parties of their friends in order to “escape” Elo hell.
Elo hell has also been noted as existing outside of video games, such as in the matchmaking app Tinder , which also uses a variant of the Elo rating system. Supposing that one is in Elo hell has been known to cause frustration and video game rage. This has caused games that use the Elo system to be noted as some of the most “toxic” games to play.
Esports players of competitive games have recommended that players who are “stuck in Elo hell” “take every game seriously” and focus on winning at all costs. Riot Games claimed in a update to the matchmaking FAQ of League of Legends that Elo hell did not exist, citing the Dunning-Kruger effect and negativity bias from their worst experiences with the game as reasons why players believe the system is “imbalanced”. Experiments conducted by two Dota 2 players appeared to conclude that Elo hell did not exist in that game in a significant way, as an experienced player was able to raise their rank merely by playing well and “carrying” their team.
The third competitive season of Overwatch introduced changes in skill rating ostensibly designed to prevent players from being stuck in Elo hell.

Dota 2 hands out 19 year bans
The first big and quite surprising change was that Valve got rid of Solo queue in its original form. That said, Dota is a team game, so pushing players towards playing in pre-made parties to fully enjoy the game makes a lot of sense. This might currently be a problem because the new matchmaking update makes Solo a bit less enjoyable especially on the higher MMR brackets while finding a dedicated same-skill-level party is hard.

On the new matchmaking and a self update. Just wanted to share my thoughts on the new matchmaking system and give a self update.
Valve pushed their update right after I wrote all this so it’s already outdated but I’m just going to post this anyways. This will be long and disorganized because I like stream of consciousness vomiting my thoughts out so tl;dr: I think the new matchmaking system is a step in the right direction, these are the best games I’ve experienced in mm, there are definitely problems, but hopefully they’ll get fixed, and I’ll be streaming as long as I enjoy playing said games.
I used to play sc2 before I started playing Dota 2 at a fairly competitive level.
New Dota 2 MMR system removes Core/Support scores
Players who will queue for a ranked match in a party will notice a slight change in the way the searching algorithm will work. According to Valve, up until now the algorithm was averaging the MMR on both sides to match five players against other five. In the past we used to prioritize rank spread between the two teams as one of the main criteria for the matchmaker to judge success, however as part of this update we are changing its priorities.
It will now put a big emphasis on making sure that the roles are more symmetric rather than other criteria. Smurfing, boosting, intentionally ruining a game and the usage of scripts will be heavily looked into with the new update and will result in new waves of bans.
And i have to say that matchmaking has sinked into all time low. deal with this discrepency of people who leave the game, and low lvl’s who still season cause i have huge previous exp in highelo dota2 and dota 1, also
Possibly old news for many of you, but a new Valve red name has shown up on the Dota 2 Dev Forum answering questions about how matches are created. You should be able to find his entire post history here. All 10 players in this game were in the 93rdth percentile MMR range. This was a smurf. They did play poorly in this match, but in the previous match , in which they played against several Elo players, they had 13 kills and 1 death. Also of notice here, the match in question is rated Very High in-game.
Regardless, it appears that player percentiles as low as 93rd will queue into games that are rated Very High. Finally, this answer also confirms that Valve does attempt to identify smurfs…. The win player did have the highest MMR in the game. So this was not a great match. There was a player who had waited 5 minutes, which is why a match of this relatively low quality was accepted.
Is this “fair” matchmaking?

Fix Matchmaking so that low levels with basic gear aren’t playing against players in top tier gear. Paying a certain amount of money doesn’t give you benefits over others that put you in a disadvantage. That is a pay to win model and we do not have that. There is also no plan to have some type of gear score. A high-level player can choose to go in with full or no gear.
The level only shows progress and possibly what they have in the stash but not directly related. Like any game, experience puts you in a better position since you know the game more, the maps, the mechanics, etc.
