My new Sheer Luxe blog is up. The subject? Summer panic. I like clothes. I love getting dressed. I love the way the right outfit makes me feel tall and smart and confident and not in the least self-conscious. Getting dressed every day takes less than 10 minutes, but the mood-boosting effects last all day.
A refreshingly honest, achingly funny read for fans of Bridesmaids , Caitlin Moran, and Pinot Grigio. Confronted by tales of misery, she decides to set-up her own self-help website for the broken-hearted. But as Viv passes through the three essential stages of grief denial, vodka, disastrous haircut , she becomes determined that it’s not too late to try and get Rob back.
When things get out of hand after a drunken declaration of love at an extremely inappropriate moment, Viv’s scruffy, tequila-swilling best friend Max is there to pick up the pieces. Viv starts to realise that maybe the real thing has been under her nose all this time, and now – one ex and a massive error of judgement later – she has to face the question:.

Is it normal to feel so detached from reality after a heartbreak? Is this heartbreak? And as usual, my mind is wandering. The shower is huge, taking up about half the bathroom, which, like the rest of the hotel room, is dark and sexy with a dash of chinoiserie, and flattering lighting that whispers five star in a posh accent.
Perhaps I should call my sister. She is always good at being comforting.

After breaking up with her boyfriend of, well, forever, Abigail Wood must learn how to be single from scratch. With his advice, she learns to navigate the bastard-infested waters of the bar scene and practices the art of being bulletproof. The new Abigail is cocky, calm, composed…but what happens when she meets her match? The book starts with high drama as main character Abigail Wood has a very tearful meltdown in the shower of her hotel suite at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong.
Further drama ensues as a nameless male character swoops to the rescue. It soon becomes clear that said male is not the man Abigail wants to have come running in her hour of need, but before we can find out more the prologue ends and chapter one whisks us back six months to a slightly more controlled Abigail preparing to go on her first date. He seemed nice enough to me. Abigail is nice and likeable.

Brilliant feature from Lucy Mangan at The Guardian. Like a real woman, perhaps. But it takes a lot of whipping to make a good meringue. With novel-writing, as with everything else in life, I specialise in intuitive improvisation AKA, winging it. For the first few chapters I was just writing to make my sister laugh. Then when it was suddenly a real book, I had to nut it out and — importantly — all the subplots, too. It was pretty easy, but this is probably why the book is so character-centric, and why the plot relies on coincidence.
